About RTA Products & The Environment

Posted on by RTA Team

While protecting the environment has become a bit of a fad, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s an important task that is entrusted to those of us who live on the earth. In many industries, product waste can be a big issue, along with misuse of the materials that they have available. At RTA, we realize that this is an important issue, so we’ve taken a few steps to make sure that our company is protecting the environment, and caring for the earth that we live on.

Using Environmentally Friendly Materials

At RTA Products, our desks are manufactured using a medium density fibreboard (MDF). This material is an environmentally friendly way of using timber. MDF is produced from quick growing pine woodlands that are regularly replenished. They take between 15 and 40 years to mature, and these woodlands exist worldwide.

While growing, the timber absorbs and reduces carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, giving off valuable oxygen as a natural by-product. The carbon dioxide becomes locked in the carbon of the timber (charcoal). We believe that it is not necessary to use hardwoods from tropical rain forests; why endanger the world when you can enrich the environment and make fantastic things out of MDF?

Helpful Information About MDF

MDF is a type of fiberboard made from wood or other lignocelluloses materials, refined into fibers and reconstituted with a resin binder (glue) carried out at elevated temperatures. It is what is called an “engineered” wood product.

The raw wood material can be in almost any form or specie and in almost any mixture such as low-grade wood, branches, small diameter trees, hardwood, softwood, mill waste and forestry waste chips. As such, the recovery rate of the raw material is almost 100%. Compared to most wood processing industries, the quality requirements placed on the forest resource for the production of MDF are far less demanding.

Much of the MDF manufactured worldwide utilizes wastage wood fiber in the form of small logs and branches, wood chips and sawdust generated in the production and processing of sawn timber and plywood.

MDF is resistant to warp, moisture, and compression. It is dimensionally stable with close tolerances and screw holding abilities. It can be nailed, stapled, routed, sanded and screwed just like any natural wood product. It has the mechanical and physical characteristics approaching the levels associated with solid wood, and in many applications can be used as an ideal substitute for solid wood.
